Seacoast of Bohemia

I have seen two such sights, by sea and by land! But I am not to say it is a sea, for it is now the sky:
Betwixt the firmament and it you cannot thrust a bodkin's point.

Picky American

Woke up this morning from a dream that my car had been towed while I tried to work at my second job cleaning a bed and breakfast. I had to spend all day trying to get it out. Despite this, and my dream-anxiety about being unable to finish my job, I was still less anxious about it than I am about my real work.

So, other news here: still snowing! And still very cold. It's all right in the house, though, because we bought a heater from Tesco, and now my position on the couch, from which I stray only to straighten up the house, is toasty warm. In the past couple of days I've caught up on my New Yorker and gone through a minor Lady Gaga obsession. And kept the house neat. I'm also adding to my list of foods I want to learn how to make the way I like them – I'm afraid I've become an awful picky American! Although of course the food is good here (and often cheaper than in supermarkets at home), some things are just Not Right according to my tastebuds – I haven't yet, for instance, found the kind of bread I want – airy and slightly chewy with a crisp, tough crust – and, weirdly, I find almost all the Indian food too sweet. (Why would this be? Why would American Indian food be less sweet than British Indian food? I haven't yet lit on a dish that isn't almost all onions and or tomatoes, both of which vegetables are all right in their own right, but tend to make food too sweet for my taste.) On the other hand, you can get Brie cheese for like two dollars, so it's a trade-off.

Last night we went to my first weekly pub quiz. It was fun, and our team won, but that isn't too much of an accomplishment. We were by far the biggest team, and I think the only one to be composed entirely of grad students and faculty members. There was a musicals round, where I was ashamed I didn't know several of the songs! (From Chess and High School Musical -- and I didn't recognize the one from Evita until way into the song.) That didn't matter, though, as everyone else knew it. I also got a question about the Red River wrong. Still, I was glad to go. I like Nick's friends Amber and Ben a lot, and the other people I met were nice too.

Remember rocking the Nicole Kidman category in London with Kate?

Oh! I'd forgotten that! In fact, I've _still_ forgotten it. When did I know a lot about Nicole Kidman? That must have been mostly you!

trapani wanted to double our money on the "funk" category, to which one of his answers was "i don't know what it is, but it's not funk" and other condescending, incorrect answers. Whereas we actually doubled our money on the mystery category, which we got entirely correct (name 10 nicole kidman movies), between the three girls.

Oh yeah! I remember him saying that! Ha!
