Seacoast of Bohemia

I have seen two such sights, by sea and by land! But I am not to say it is a sea, for it is now the sky:
Betwixt the firmament and it you cannot thrust a bodkin's point.

Day Seven: Saturday

In the morning, we decide to have all our new friends and Katy to a dinner that we will cook, because we like them so much. But first, we go to the racetrack. (Horses, not cars.) Yet another new experience for me and for Jessica. But not for Carrie and Jamie.

Collectively, we lose four dollars on a horse called "Virginia's Pride," but that's all we bet on. (Carrie and I each bet two dollars. We're high rollers, we are.) But we watch several races. Jamie explains all the horse colors, and a man and woman behind us tell us a very elaborate story about how the woman's daughter got arrested last night on Bourbon street. We do not win a thousand dollars in a drawing, but we probably come close. Jamie and Carrie buy little water-on tattoos.

Then we go to the whole foods store and get all kinds of stuff for dinner. It feels a lot like Portland to me, but that's because Portland has lots of wholefoods stores and is also a big city. I like the wholefoods store.

We cook a recipe involving pasta and lots and lots of vegetables (fennel! my new favorite.) and slice bread and things. Carrie makes margaritas and banana bread too. Everyone comes over and the dinner is a success. Jessica is the funniest, because at one point, Eric is being kind of pretentious about how much he likes an Elliott Smith CD and says very seriously, "I would give up an arm for this CD." And Jessica very scathingly replies, "That's kind of excessive, since you could just pay like twelve dollars and get your own copy."

We're sad to say goodbye to everyone. We're also really sad that we're leaving the next day. After the Texans and Katy leave (even they've apparently had enough partying, and are tired), we play some Scrabble (Jamie is the champion by enormous amounts) and watch Jessica's Utena movie and then we pack up and go to bed. Spirits are a little dampened, but we soldier through. We love each other. And New Orleans.
