Seacoast of Bohemia

I have seen two such sights, by sea and by land! But I am not to say it is a sea, for it is now the sky:
Betwixt the firmament and it you cannot thrust a bodkin's point.

The Winter's Tale 3.3.79-81

periwigg

"By and by comes Chapman, the periwigg-maker, and upon my liking it, without more ado I went up, and there he cut off my haire, which went a little to my heart at present to part with it; but, it being over, and my periwigg on, I paid him 3l. for it; and away went he with my owne haire to make up another of, and I by and by, after I had caused all my mayds to look upon it; and they conclude it do become me; though Jane was mightily troubled for my parting of my own haire, and so was Besse."

From Pepys's diary this day in 1683. It's so heart-rendingly intimate. This site is awesome. I just found it a couple days ago, and it's going to be a daily read from now on. That same mix of curious public self-fashioning and sudden intimacy that blogs have you find in Pepys, I think, he being really at the beginning of personal diary-keeping. The owner of the site clearly also thinks so.

Pepys's diary goes a little to my heart at present too.
